stormrider
technical director

stormrider is a 70mm 60fps ride film done in 1997 for showscan entertainment. my involvement included supervising the technical aspects of visionart's work as well as handling some of the effects and particle system animation delivered for the film.

the film is over 4 minutes long and about half of that length is entirely computer generated. the initial fall from 40,000+ feet to the top of the empire state building was achived through a combination of digitally enhanced photographs of manhatten and photographic and digital cloud and mist elements. the end of the ride through the sewers of manhatten was generated entirely in the computer.

because the film is released in both HD and 70mm formats the rendering resolution needed to be quite high. that combined with the 60 fps playback required manipulating ten times more data than that of a normal feature film.
